The 2019 Pan American Games Qualifier got underway this evening from Managua, Nicaragua with Team USA going 3-0 to start the competition.
2019 Pan Am Box Off Champion Bruce Carrington (New York, N.Y.) made an impressive tournament debut for the American team. The lightweight grabbed all five judges cards over Alberto Mora of Mexico to advance to Sunday’s quarterfinal bout against two-time Pan American Games Champion and two-time Olympic bronze medalists Lazaro Alvarez of Cuba.
Light welterweight Keyshawn Davis (Norfolk, Va.) picked up the second unanimous decision win of the day for Team USA over Peru’s Miguel German. Davis will return to the ring tomorrow, where he will face John Gutierrez of Columbia in the second day of preliminaries for his weight class.
Virginia Fuchs (Houston, Texas) faced a familiar opponent in the opening round to make her 2019 international debut and to close out the day for the Americans. The flyweight won unanimously over Brazil’s Grazieli Jesus to advance to the next round of competition.
Joining Davis in the second day of action from Nicaragua will be Michael Angeletti (Spring, Texas), Yarisel Ramirez (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Adrian Tillman (Colorado Springs, Colo.) Follow USA Boxing on social media, as well as click here to follow the competition.
