Knockout Second Day of 2019 Emil Jechev Tournament for USA Boxing

The youth men’s team continued their winning ways at the 2019 Emil Jechev Tournament in Botevgrad, Bulgaria by picking up two more wins to go 5-1 in two days of boxing.


Light flyweight Angel Barrientes (Las Vegas, Nev.) picked up the first win of the day for Team USA over Greece’s Ioannis Evmorfiadis by unanimous decision to advance to the next round of boxing. Barrientes will have a day of rest before returning to the ring on Thursday.


The highlight of the day was Ernesto Mercado’s (Pomona, Calif.) knockout victory against Gabov Daniil of Russia in his international debut. The lightweight will face Bulgarian Bozhidar Dzhrov in tomorrow’s quarterfinals bout.


The final American to box today was welterweight Amari Jones (Antioch, Calif.), who made an impressive International debut but fell short on a 4-1 split decision to Nikita Nikitin of Russia.


Joining Mercado in the third day of acton includes Armani Almestica (Orlando, Fla.),  Marcel Balatier (Miami Gardens, Fla.), Ralph Clemente (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), Jahmal Harvey (Oxon HIll, Md.) and Michael Hudson (Milton, Ga.). A complete lineup can be seen below.


Almestica, Clemente and Harvey will compete in the second session of the day, beginning at 5:00 a.m. MST, while Balatier, Hudson and Mercado will compete in the final session of the day that begins at 9:30 a.m. MST. Click here to access the live stream.
