Changes to Olympic Boxing Weight Categories Pending IOC Approval

THIS PERTAINS TO BOXERS IN THE ELITE AGE DIVISION ONLY

USA Boxing has been notified that the upcoming Olympic Games will likely have a different set of weight classes than previous Games. Based on directives surrounding gender equality in sports, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has mandated that AIBA, the International governing body for Olympic boxing, must restructure the weight divisions to be contested at the Tokyo Olympic Games in the summer of 2020. 

Despite efforts by AIBA to restructure the Olympic program without affecting the men's weight divisions, the 2020 Olympic Games will be contested with eight (8) men's weight categories and five (5) women's weight categories.

With the new structure in place, AIBA has proposed the following Olympic weight categories, which are pending approval of the International Olympic Committee:

Super Heavy (91+kg/201+ lb)

Fly (51 kg/112 lb)

Feather (57 kg/125 lb)

Light (60 kg/132 lb)

Welter (69 kg/152 lb)

Middle (75 kg/ 165 lb)


With the restructured Olympic weight categories expecting to be approved at the upcoming AIBA Congress, taking place November 2-4, 2018, USA Boxing has determined that it will begin contesting these weight categories at the *2018 USA Boxing Elite National Championships, December 2-8, 2018.


The *2018 USA Boxing Elite National Championships will now contest the following weight categories:

(Note: This weight class will

All elite boxers who have qualified in a weight category that is no longer being contested at the *2018 Elite National Championships must change their weight category to a weight category listed above by November 7, 2018.


Any boxer who has qualified for the *2018 Elite National Championship in a Non-Olympic weight category will have the option to change their weight category to an Olympic weight category, by November 7, 2018, if he or she chooses to do so.


All boxers who have qualified for the *2018 Elite National Championships will receive an email from USA Boxing with instructions to confirm their weight class and participation by Friday, October 26, 2018.

*Note: The 2018 USA Boxing Elite National Championships may lead to Olympic qualification pathways taking place in 2019 and serve as the first qualifier to USA Boxing’s 2020 Olympic Trials.


*Note: The Olympic Qualification Guidelines are still being finalized and have yet to be announced. Once these guidelines are announced by AIBA and the IOC, USA Boxing will write athlete selection procedures for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and post them on usaboxing.org.
