Team USA Grabs Two Wins on Day One of 2018 Youth Continental Championships

The first night of the 2018 Youth Continental Championships began tonight at the Hotel Elegante in Colorado Springs, Colo. with seven exciting bouts that included two wins for Team USA.

Flyweight Asa Stevens (Waianea, Hawaii) and bantamweight Harley Mederos (Brooklyn, N.Y.) made a strong first impression in the tournament.

Mederos picked up the first win for the American delegation with a split decision victory over Cairo Zeus Bartolome Farias of Venezuela, while Stevens closed out the session by taking all five score cards against the Dominican Republics Juan Minaya.

Team USA will return to action tomorrow with lightweight Jeremy Adorno (Allentown, Pa.) and welterweight Tristian Kalkreuth (Duncanville, Texas) boxing in the noon session, while middleweight Lorenzo Simpson (Baltimore, Md.) and women’s bantamweight Heaven Garcia (El Monte, Calif.) will make their tournament debut in the 5:00 p.m. session.

This year’s Youth Continental Championships serve as the qualification pathway to the 2018 Youth Olympic Games and 2018 Youth World Championships. A total of 14 countries and over 100 have traveled to Colorado Springs, Colo. for this year’s championships that will conclude Saturday.
