Team USA Grabs Two Wins on Day 2 of Emil Jechev Memorial Tournament

Flyweight Asa Stevens (Waianea, Hawaii) and light welterweight Otha Jones III (Toledo, Ohio) picked up wins in their international debuts on the second day of the 2018 Emil Jechev Memorial Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria.


Stevens was the first American to step into the ring today, taking a victory over Slovenia’s Nik Nikolov Veber to guarantee himself his first international medal. He will return to the ring in tomorrow’s semifinals bout.


Jones III picked up Team USA’s second win to advance to tomorrow’s semifinals. Jones III win over the Netherland’s Brian Vossen clinched his first international medal as well.


The third member of the American delegation to step into the ring today, welterweight Tristan Kalkreuth (Duncanville, Texas), fell short of advancing to the medal rounds in his international debut.


Team USA has clinched a total of six medals, with three boxers yet to step into the ring at the third edition of this tournament. National Junior and Youth Coach Augie Sanchez (Las Vegas, Nev.) is leading the team with Roger Chance (East Orange, N.J.) serving as an assistant coach.
