Isamary Aquino (Universal City, Texas) and Citlalli Ortiz (Coachella, Calif.) both grabbed victories in today’s quarterfinals at the 2017 Women’s Youth World Championships in Guwahati, India. Their victories guarantee them both at least a bronze medal in their first World Championships.
Aquino grabbed the first win for the young American delegation over Germany’s Marie Bachmaier. Her unanimous decision victory places her in Saturday’s semifinal.
Ortiz closed out today’s competition with an impressive unanimous decision victory over Shannon Reilly of Ireland. The welterweight will have two days of rest before returning to the ring for her semifinal bout.
The remaining four members of Team USA, light welterweight Aidyl Cardenas (Calexico,Calif.), lightweight Diana Estrada (Hillsboro, Oregon), flyweight Heaven Garcia (El Monte, Calif.) and featherweight Roma Martinez (Humble, Texas), boxing today saw their World Championship run come to an end.
The American’s are being led by Head Coach Billy Walsh (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and assistant coaches Kay Koroma (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Jeff Mays (San Antonio, Texas). This year’s championships is serving as one of the qualification processes for the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina and has brought over 150 boxers from 38 different counties.
