The second day of the 2017 USA Boxing Elite and Youth National Championships & Junior and Prep Open in Salt Lake City, Utah was the opening day for the elite men’s division, as well as crowned 14 prep champions.
The first session of the day saw the prep and junior divisions put on a show for the crowd, as the juniors and the remaining prep divisions got one step closer to their championship bouts. During the first session, our unposed champions were recognized. Those champions can be found below.
The evening session brought the elite men into the ring for their first rounds of action. The session saw three members of the 2017 Elite Men’s World Championship team, as well as marked the Elite National Championships debut of two-time amateur World Champion, Marc Castro (Fresno, Calif.) and 2016 Youth World Championship bronze medalist Richard Torres (Tulare, Calif.).
All three members, Delante Johnson (Cleveland, Ohio), Quinton Randall (Katy, Texas) and Freudis Rojas (Las Vegas, Nev.) grabbed victories. Johnson and Rojas will meet each other in Friday’s semifinal bouts.
Castro and Torres both grabbed victories in their debuts. Castro will face 2017 World Championship silver medalist Duke Ragan (Cincinnati, Ohio) after his win tonight, while Torres first round stoppage put him Saturday’s semifinal against Daniel Bean of Old Bridge, N.J.
Isamary Aquino (Universal City, Texas) returned to the ring after her bronze medal at the 2017 Youth World Championships last week in India. Five other youth female boxers advanced to the next round of the tournament.
