USA Boxing Announces Presenting Sponsors of 2017 USA Boxing National Championships

USA Boxing announced today that SHOWTIME Sports® and the Pete Suazo Utah Athletic Commission have been named the presenting sponsors of the 2017 USA Boxing Elite and Youth National Championships & Junior and Prep Open in Salt Lake City, Utah.


“USA Boxing is excited to partner with both SHOWTIME Sports and the Pete Suazo Utah Athletic Commission for our 2017 National Championships,” stated USA Boxing Executive Director Mike McAtee. “SHOWTIME Sports has been a leader in promoting the sport of boxing for many years, and the Utah Athletic Commission has helped push the growth of boxing in Utah.”


SHOWTIME Sports has been among the stewards of the sport of boxing since debuting in March 1986. Showcasing some of the world’s top fights on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING®.  The network also televises ShoBox: The New Generation which broadcasts feature fights between boxing’s top prospects. The network’s expert analyst, Boxing Hall of Fame announcer Al Bernstein will be serve as Master of Ceremonies of the USA Boxing Alumni Association Hall of Fame Reception during the National Championships.  Also expected to attend the Hall of Fame Reception and the Championships is Raul Marquez another SHOWTIME boxing expert analyst and a USA Boxing 1992 Olympian.


The Pete Suazo Utah Athletic Commission regulates all professional unarmed combat sports including boxing, kickboxing and mixed martial arts and was named after the late Utah State Senator Eliud “Pete” Suazo who was an advocate for youth and minorities in the state and a boxing enthusiast.


 “On behalf of the Pete Suazo Utah Athletic Commission (PSUAC), we are delighted USA Boxing is bringing their Elite and Youth National Championships to Utah,” said Taylor Leavitt, Chairman of the Commission.


“It is the privilege of the PSUAC to support this opportunity which will bring our country’s elite next-generation athletes to Utah to compete in the sweet science of boxing.  It is quite likely that those attending this USA Boxing Championship may see a future USA Olympian or perhaps even a future boxing world champion competing at this event.  We are also thrilled these young athletes, including their families and trainers, will have the chance to get acquainted with the state of Utah and the wonderful people who are excited to host them.”

 

Winners of the 2017 National Championships will earn a spot on Team USA’s High Performance Squad, which will give them the opportunity to represent the United States in international competition. The five-day tournament will feature over 700 boxers ranging in age from eight to 40. The tournament will be free to the public Tuesday-Friday, with tickets available for purchase for Saturday’s Elite Finals.
