Colorado Springs to Host the Pathway to the Podium Olympic Trials for Boxing Qualifier in June

(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – After a three-year absence, the Pikes Peak region will once again host a key USA Boxing qualifying tournament. Hundreds of male and female boxers will descend on Colorado Springs, Colo., this summer for the Pathway to the Podium Olympic Trials Qualifier I presented by the Daniels Fund. Athletes in the 13 Olympic weight divisions will vie for spots in the upcoming Olympic Trials during the tournament June 22-27 at the historic City Auditorium in downtown Colorado Springs.

A the first of three Pathway to the Podium events leading to the Olympic Trials for Men’s and Women’s Boxing, the event promises great daily action in downtown Colorado Springs. The top three finishers in the three women’s Olympic weight divisions and two finalists in each of the 10 men’s weight classes from the event will advance to the Olympic Trials.

“Colorado Springs has a rich and colorful Olympic history and we are excited to bring our first Pathway to the Podium event here to the Pikes Peak region,” said USA Boxing Executive Director Mike Martino. “This Olympic qualifying process always brings out the best in our athletes and I can’t wait to watch all of the action at City Auditorium in June.”

Registration for the tournament opened today and top athletes in both the men’s and women’s divisions are expected to compete in the first-time event. Competition will take place in two sessions daily throughout the event, which is being held in conjunction with the Pikes Peak International at the City Auditorium.

The Pathway to the Podium Olympic Trials Qualifier I will be the first major national boxing tournament in Colorado Springs since the 2012 USA Boxing National Championships, a domestic qualifying event for the 2012 Olympic Games. Six winners from the 2012 event went on to compete in the Olympic Games in London.

Tickets for the elite boxing event start at only $15 and will available for purchase at the door daily. A full tournament competition schedule and the list of registered athletes will be released prior to the event.
