Elite Women to Face Northern Neighbors in the Battle of the Frontiers on August 21

Aug. 19, 2014, 1:41 p.m. (ET)

(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – Team USA’s elite female athletes have traveled north of the border to take on their Canadian counterparts on Thursday in the Battle of the Frontiers in Montreal, Canada. The international duel will be the second match-up of 2014 between the top women from the United States and Canada following an initial meeting in March at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in March.

The United States won six of the eight bouts in the initial contest between the neighboring nations, but the Canadian squad will be looking for revenge on their home soil on Thursday. The international duel will feature nine bouts of top-notch women’s boxing at the Complexe Sportif Claude-Robillard in Montreal. 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Marlen Esparza (Houston, Texas), 2012 U.S. Olympian Queen Underwood (Seattle, Wash.) and 2012 Canadian Olympian and three-time World Champion Mary Spencer will headline Thursday’s competition.

In addition to Esparza and Underwood, fellow 2014 USA Boxing national champions Alex Love (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Christina Cruz (New York, N.Y.), Destiny Chearino (Warwick, R.I.), Danyelle Wolf (San Diego, Calif.), and Krystal Dixon (New Rochelle, N.Y.) will compete in the event. Multi-time national champion and international veteran Franchon Crews (Baltimore, Md.) will face off with hometown hero Spencer in the highly anticipated middleweight bout. Crews claimed a victory over Spencer in their recent match-up earlier this year, but Spencer will enjoy the home-ring advantage in their rematch. 2014 USA Boxing National Championships bronze medalist Kristin Carlson (Carol Stream, Ill.) will round out the U.S. roster as she makes her international debut in featherweight action.

The United States squad arrived in Montreal on Saturday and has been training with the Canadian team since their arrival. As they did prior to their duel earlier this year, the athletes participated in a friendly sparring session on Monday in preparation for Thursday’s competition.

Coaches Daniel Soto (Kissimmee, Fla.) and Juan Estrada (San Diego, Calif.) are guiding the United States contingent in Canada with Dr. John Drye (Plains, Mont.) and AIBA official Debbie Holmes (Garland, Texas) completing the American staff.
