Wesenberg and Florian combine forces for seventh place in first-ever mixed skeleton team event
ALTENBERG, Germany (March 1, 2020)– Kendall Wesenberg (Modesto, Calif.) and Austin Florian (Southington, Conn.) combined forces to finish seventh in the first-ever skeleton mixed team event at the 2020 World Championships in Altenberg.
“It was a really good time,” Wesenberg said. “This format is sweet. You go all out in one run, and it’s really fun having all skeleton at the track. You don’t ever get to race together with your men’s teammates, so it’s really great getting the chance to do that.”
Wesenberg was the first of the pair to take a run. She pushed off the block in 5.87 seconds for a downtime of 59.19 seconds. Florian was next, and the young American powered off the start in 5.08 for a finish time of 56.97 seconds. Florian’s run was 0.61 seconds faster than any of his three runs in the men’s skeleton World Championship race.
“That was my personal best time,” Florian said. “The conditions are the same, I just stopped thinking and had a great run. It’s pretty awesome seeing everyone in a good mood. We’re all messing with each other and having fun.”
The American team clocked a total time of 1:56.16 to finish a mere 0.06 seconds from the top-six in seventh place.
Germany’s Jacqueline Loelling and Alexander Gassner won with a combined time of 1:55.39. Canadians Jane Channell and David Greszczyszyn narrowly missed earning the gold medal by 0.01 seconds with a total time of 1:55.40. Valentina Margaglio and Mattia Gaspari from Italy claimed the bronze medal with a two-run total of 1:55.82.
The 2020 World Championships will conclude today with the final runs of the four-man bobsled competition at 1 p.m. local time/7 a.m. EST.
