Chula Vista to serve as location for fourth USABS combine of the summer

By Mark Fairchild

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (June 28, 2018)- All great Olympians have one thing on the mind: Gold. So it only makes sense that USA Bobsled & Skeleton will next head to the ‘Golden Coast’ to recruit its next group of Olympic hopefuls. The fourth USABS combine of the summer will be held in Chula Vista on June 30.

Even though Californians are use to seeing the sun shine down across the coast, rather than a blanket of snow and ice, the state still has the talent to produce elite bobsled and skeleton athletes. Just ask Olympian and Newport Beach native, Carlo Valdes.

“We have a lot of athletes here,” Valdes said. “The competition level is insanely high.”

A former wide receiver and safety for UCLA, Valdes later made the transition to track where he focused his skills on the decathlon. It was then that he first heard of the sport from his coach who recommended he try out for the team. Five years later, Valdes found himself pushing the four-man in Pyeongchang behind pilot Justin Olsen.

Like Valdes, athletes participating in the combine come from a variety of disciplines, and is especially a great opportunity for those wanting to prolong their athletic careers at the highest level after college.

“You just have to relax and go out trusting that you have been training well,” Valdes said. “Speed is the name of the game.”

Those athletes who are able to power their way past the combine and through the following steps like Valdes will find the rewards to be greater than they ever imagined.

“Starting out the uncertainty is always there, but if you really embrace it and do well, then it can totally change your life,” he said.

Any athlete wishing to participate in the Chula Vista combine must pre-register. For more information, please click here.
