Antoine finishes 11th to lead Americans in St. Moritz men’s skeleton World Cup

ST. MORITZ, Switzerland (Jan 12., 2018)- Matt Antoine (Prairie du Chien, Wis.) once again led Team USA, finishing 11th today in the men’s skeleton World Cup race on the world’s only all-natural track in St. Moritz.

Antoine was competitive off the start block with push times of 4.89 and 4.91 seconds. He navigated his way through the forest for runs of 1:08.27 and 1:08.32, respectively, to finish 11th in 2:16.59. Antoine narrowly missed his fifth top-10 of the season by 0.02 seconds.

Antoine was disappointed with his results from the first half of the season in North America and after consulting with the coaching staff he opted to test a new sled after the holiday break. The 2014 Olympic medalist posted his season-best finish, seventh, in Winterberg, Germany last month, and he’s continuing to build towards the 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

Korean Sungbin Yun set a new track record of 1:07.19 en route to his win today. Yun had an extensive lead of 0.87 seconds with a combined time of 2:14.77. Germany’s Axel Jungk was second in 2:15.64, followed by Latvian Martins Dukurs in third with a total time of 2:15.87.

Greg West (Springfield, Mo.) and John Daly (Smithtown, N.Y.) finished back-to-back in the final Olympic qualification World Cup race, racing to 14th and 15th place, respectively. West was consistent today, posting start times of 5.05 and 5.04 seconds for runs of 1:08.56 and 1:08.42 to finish 14th in 2:16.98. Two-time Olympian Daly was just 0.01 seconds off his teammate for 15th place after clocking starts of 4.98 and 4.93 and downtimes of 1:08.60 and 1:08.39.

The St. Moritz World Cup continues tomorrow with the women’s and men’s two-man bobsled races. The action starts at 9:30 a.m. local time/3:30 a.m. EST and races will be streamed live on www.OlympicChannel.com.
