Olsen, Langton, Fogt and Weinstock take silver in Igls European Cup four-man bobsled

ALTENBERG, Germany (Jan 6., 2018)- Justin Olsen (San Antonio, Texas), Steve Langton (Melrose, Mass.), Chris Fogt (Alpine, Utah) and Evan Weinstock (Las Vegas, Nev.) began the new year on the podium, earning the silver medal in the Igls European Cup four-man bobsled race this morning.

“We are extremely happy to kick off the new year with a podium finish,” Olsen said. “Our goal is to remain healthy for the rest of the season and have our best results occur in February.”

Team Olsen skipped the World Cup races on the harrowing track in Altenberg, Germany this week in favor of the Austrian track — where Olsen is strong and has experienced past success — to gain more Olympic qualification points. The crew will rejoin the World Cup tour next week in St. Moritz, Switzerland for the final competition before the Olympic Team is named Jan. 15.

Olsen, Langton, Fogt and Weinstock powered their sled off the blocks for the fastest start of each heat Saturday morning, posting times of 5.01 and 4.99 seconds, respectively. Olsen navigated his sled down the track for times of 51.45 and 51.56 seconds, second-fastest of each heat.

Only Switzerland’s Clemens Bracher, teaming with Fabio Badraun, Martin Meier and Michael Kuonen, was faster, recording times of 51.32 and 51.40 to take gold by a margin of 0.29 seconds. Ivo de Bruin of the Netherlands, racing with Jeroen Piek, Bror Van der Zijdge and Janko Franjic, earned bronze with a combined time of 1:43.06.

World Cup racing continues today in Altenberg with the men’s two-man bobsled race, followed by four-man tomorrow. Live updates will be posted on USABS’ social media pages and the events will be streamed on the Olympic Channel.
