Sigulda, Latvia kicks off 2018-2019 World Cup season on Friday

SIGULDA, Latvia(Dec. 5, 2018)– While U.S. athletes have already collected 31 medals on the North American Cup and Intercontinental Cup tours, the World Cup team will get their first chance to vie for the medals this week in Sigulda, Latvia. 

Women’s skeleton, men’s skeleton and women’s bobsled last raced a World Cup in Sigulda in December 2005, while men’s bobsled hasn’t raced a World Cup on the Latvian course since February 2004. Most of the athletes racing this week have never slid the track before.

The 2018-2019 season opening World Cup will feature four of the five disciplines. Women’s skeleton, men’s skeleton and women’s bobsled will race once this week. Two-man bobsled will race twice, while Winterberg, Germany will host double four-man races next week.  

The schedule is as follows, with times listed in local time and EST in parentheses:

Friday, Dec. 7
3 p.m. (8 a.m.): Women’s bobsled

Saturday, Dec. 8
9:30 a.m. (2:30 a.m.): Men’s skeleton
1 p.m. (6 a.m.): Two-man bobsled #1

Sunday, Dec. 9
9:30 a.m. (2:30 a.m.): Women’s skeleton
1 p.m. (6 a.m.): Two-man bobsled #2

The Olympic Channel and NBCSN will broadcast the Sigulda event with same day delay coverage. The schedule is as follows, with all times listed in EST:

Friday, Dec. 7: 4-5 p.m. 
Saturday, Dec. 8: 2:30-4:30 p.m.
Sunday, Dec. 9: 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., 10-11 p.m.

NBCSN
Friday, Dec. 7: 1:30-2:30 a.m.
Sunday, Dec. 9: 11 p.m.- 12 a.m.

In women’s bobsled, three-time Olympic medalist Elana Meyers Taylor(Douglasville, Ga.) will team with 2018 USA Bobsled National Push Champion Sylvia Hoffman(Arlington, Texas) in the BMW sled. Team veteran Brittany Reinbolt(Searcy, Ark.) and Olympic silver medalist Lauren Gibbs(Los Angeles, Calif.) are paired up for Friday’s race in the KOA-branded BMW-made sled.

OlympianCodie Bascue(Whitehall, N.Y.) will team up with Hakeem Abdul-Saboor(Powhatan, Va.) in both two-man races. Justin Olsen(San Antonio, Texas), racing the ORDA-branded BMW sled, will compete with Jimmy Reed(Garmisch, Germany) on Saturday and Kyler Allison(Austin, Texas) on Sunday. Abdul-Saboor and Reed are veterans on the squad, while Allison will be making his World Cup debut.

Savannah Graybill(Denver, Pa.) and Kendall Wesenberg(Modesto, Calif.) will represent Team USA in women’s skeleton, while Kyle Brown(Concord, N.H.) and Greg West(Springfield, Mo.) will compete in the men’s skeleton race. Austin Florian(Southington, Conn.) is racing the Koenigssee, Germany European Cup this week before joining the World Cup squad next week in Winterberg.
