USA Skeleton National Team announced for 2017-2018 season
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (Oct. 18, 2017)- Twelve athletes were named to the 2017-2018 USA Skeleton National Team this morning after points were tallied following the fourth and final selection race in Lake Placid. Selections began in Calgary, Canada and continued in Lake Placid as athletes battled it out for a coveted spot on the World Cup and Intercontinental Cup tours.
“The Olympic season brings out the best in all the athletes,” said Darrin Steele, USA Bobsled & Skeleton CEO. “We saw some of the closest skeleton races we’ve seen in years and it was a real battle to make the team. It’s always exciting to see the proven veterans getting challenged by athletes moving up the rankings because it makes everyone better.”
It’s a pivotal year for athletes racing on the various tours. The 2018 Olympic Team is expected to be announced on January 15 based on points earned throughout the season.
John Daly (Smithtown, N.Y.) swept the Lake Placid races to propel himself to the top of trials ranking after second and third place finishes in Calgary. Daly enters his third Olympic season as USA-1 to lead the men on the World Cup team. After a 2016-2017 season riddled with injuries, Greg West (Springfield, Mo.) enters the Olympic season in top form. West won both Calgary races and posted third places finishes in Lake Placid to solidify his position on the World Cup squad. Daly and West will be joined by 2014 Olympic bronze medalist Matt Antoine (Prairie du Chien, Wis.), who posted three second-place finishes and a fourth place result in the series to earn his World Cup nomination.
Kendall Wesenberg (Modesto, Calif.) led the women’s field with a win, two second-place finishes and a third place result to start the season as the top-ranked women’s competitor. She’ll be joined on the World Cup tour by three-time Olympian Katie Uhlaender (Breckenridge, Colo.), who won two of the four selection races, and Savannah Graybill (Denver, Pa.), who finished in the top four in each of the races to claim her spot.
Six athletes were selected to compete on the Intercontinental Cup tour. Kyle Brown (Concord, N.H.), Mike Rogals (Orwell. Vt.) and Nathan Crumpton (Park City, Utah) will represent the men’s team, while Annie O’Shea (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.), Megan Henry (Roxbury, Conn.) and Gracie Clapp-Taylor (Saint Johns, Fla.) will compete for the women’s team.
Stephen Garbett (Parker, Colo.), Alex Ivanov (Carlisle, Mass.), Veronica Day (Vienna, Va.) and Samantha Culiver (Scottsdale, Ariz.) will represent Team USA on the European Cup tour. The following athletes were named to the North American Cup team: Austin Florian (Southington, Conn.), Austin McCrary (Colleyville, Texas), Dan Barefoot (Orlando, Fla.), Chris Strup (Defiance, Ohio ), Andrew Blaser (Meridian, Idaho), Michelle Toukan (Central City, Neb.), Kelly Curtis (Princeton, N.J.), Kristen Hurley (Columbia, Conn.), Mystique Ro (Nokesville, Va.) and Kellie Delka (Collinsville, Texas). Mike Brandt (West Haven, Conn.) and Megan Dovell (Duluth, Ga.) will also get an opportunity to race on the North American Cup tour this season.
