USA Badminton is excited to announce that Beth Sopka has been elected to the USAB Board of Directors as the Technical Official Director.

Sopka has been involved in the badminton community for more than 25 years, starting her journey in the sport building the junior program at the Gut ‘n Feathers Club in Marblehead, Mass. Sopka was one of the original organizers of the New England Junior Open and has been a long-time member of the Boston Open organizing committee.

"The board of directors of USA Badminton is both honored and thrilled that Beth Sopka will be serving with us in guiding our sport in the future,” said USAB Board Chair Ken Wong. “Beth comes to us as a highly respected technical official with years of experience that will make our leadership team stronger!”

Sopka has served on the Boards for both the Massachusetts Badminton Association and the Northeast Badminton Association, with multiple terms as president of both.

As a technical official, Sopka began in 1997 at the Junior Nationals. She worked her way up to National 1 status within a few years and is now a National 3 umpire and umpire trainer. Additionally, Sopka began her career as a referee in the early 2000’s and continues to work as a National Referee at events throughout the United States.

Perhaps most importantly, Sopka has furthered the growth in numbers and the quality of officials around the country.

As a player, Sopka is a Senior National champion, earning the title in 2004 in Mixed Doubles with Andy Chong.

Sopka is a retired IT professional and high school math teacher. She has a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from Harvard University. She lives in Boston and works at the Boston Badminton Club, where she continues to play in and organize events.
