On Tuesday, March 3, USA Badminton graciously welcomed Mastora Arezo to our Anaheim headquarters to lay down future groundwork for USAB to collaborate with the Afghanistan Badminton Federation.

For all those wondering about Ms. Arezo, here is a little background:

Arezo was elected as the President of the Afghanistan Badminton Federation back in 2012, breaking gender barriers as the first woman director and youngest sports director in her country’s history. She also heads the Afghanistan Olympic Badminton Committee as well as holds a board member position on BWF Badminton Asia. As the head of Afghanistan Badminton, she has expanded the federation to 17 provinces through a large-scale grassroots campaign. Despite the barriers she faces in Afghanistan, President Arezo remains hopeful and stands firm in her continued promotion of sports and female empowerment. She believes that badminton has the power to enhance an individual’s life, establish gender equality and to transcend political issues between countries.

Meeting President Arezo on Tuesday was humbling and inspiring. Despite the adversity she faces in a war-torn country, Ms. Arezo is ambitious and dedicated to creating a stronger future for Afghanistan badminton. She hopes to continue expanding the reach of badminton, to develop facilities and training programs for elite players and eventually aim for Olympic qualifiers by 2024. USAB is excited to find opportunities to partner with the Afghanistan Badminton Federation to accomplish these goals. Given our shared mission to promote inclusion, equity and the value of sports, we look forward to our next meeting in July to solidify plans for collaboration.

USAB would also like to thank Visit Anaheim (home of USA Badminton) for providing their amazing hospitality throughout the meeting. Special thanks to Orange County Badminton Club for providing a brief tour of their facility.
