USA Badminton is excited and proud to announce that decorated American Swimmer and Olympian Nancy Hogshead-Makar has joined the USA Badminton Board of Directors as an Independent Director. Hogshead-Makar will fulfill USA Badminton's need for expertise in SafeSport, Title IX, and diversity equity & inclusion initiatives. Ms. Hogshead-Makar will also serve as USAB's Congressional Liaison. Ms. Hogshead-Makar will bring a wealth of knowledge about the NCAA's Emerging Sport for Women Program. It is the goal of USAB and Interim CEO Linda French to have Women's Badminton included as an NCAA varsity sport by the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Hogshead-Makar is a civil rights lawyer and CEO of Champion Women, an organization providing legal advocacy for girls and women in sports. She is a well-known expert in sports issues; she has been teaching sports law courses for 20 years. USAB sought out her expertise in its continued effort to embrace an "athlete first" culture and decision making. Nancy Hogshead-Makar's appointment to the Board is consistent with this effort to make America's Olympic Movement athlete-centric. She will be tasked with USAB's legislative efforts and assuring that the entire sport community - including athletes - are trained on best practices regarding athlete abuse and SafeSport in our goal to make USA Badminton a leader in SafeSport practices.

Hogshead-Makar represented the United States at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where she won three gold medals and one silver medal. She is a winner of the Kiputh Award, which is given to the nation's best all-around swimmer. She is a member of 12 Halls of Fame, including the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame; the International Swimming Hall of Fame; the International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame; the National Consortium for Academics and Sports Hall of Fame. Sports Illustrated ranked her as Florida's 13th greatest athlete overall of the 20th Century.

Hogshead-Makar was unanimously selected and approved by the USAB Nominating & Governance Committee and vetted for conflicts of interest through the Ethics/Judicial Committee. Ms. Hogshead-Maker will serve a four-year term running through 2024 and will then be eligible for a second four-year term.

Ken Wong, USAB's Chair of the Board, said, "It is with great pleasure that we welcome to the USAB's Board of Directors someone as highly respected in the world of sports as Nancy Hogshead-Makar, a high caliber Gold Medal Olympic athlete, an outspoken champion for women in sports and a strong advocate for SafeSport! Nancy will be a great addition to the leadership of the sport of badminton."

Nancy Hogshead-Makar said, “I’m delighted to be serving on a board in the Olympic Movement that shares my values of inclusion, diversity and safety. USA Badminton has ambitious short and long-term goals sport, and I’m excited about the possibilities of an NGB working in service to its athletes.”
