U.S. teams earn spots on the podium at Pan Am Team Continental Championships 2020

The United States had a men’s and women’s team reach the podium at the Male & Female Pan Am Team Continental Championships 2020 in Salvador Bahia, Brazil. The women’s team brought home a silver medal, while the men’s team earned bronze. The event began on Thursday, February 13 and concluded on Sunday, February 16.

Women’s team: Kuei-Ya Chen, Natalie Chi, Francesca Corbett, Chinue De La Merced, Allison Lee, Sanchita Pandey, Esther Shi and Katherine Tor

The women’s team opened with a convincing 5-0 victory over the Falkland Islands in group play on Thursday, but fell to Brazil, 2-3, in session three later in the day. Chi and Corbett earned singles victories against Brazil.

The U.S. came back on Friday to defeat Peru, 4-1, won Group B, and earned a place in the semifinals. In the match, Chi, Shi and Pandey picked up wins in singles, while the duo of Chen/Pandey earned a victory in doubles.

Against Mexico in the semifinals, the U.S. once again won all three singles matches to win the match 3-0 and advance to the finals.

Against the defending champions, Canada, in the finals, the United States fell 3-0.

Men’s team: Phillip Chew, Ryan Chew, Vinson Chiu, Kyle Emerick, Timothy Lam, Sattawat Pongnairat, Howard Shu, and Ryan Zheng

The men’s team started the event with a dominant 5-0 victory over Peru, then defeated Guatemala, 3-2. In the second win, Lam won the lone singles point, while the U.S. won both doubles points behind the duos of Chew/Chew and Chiu/Pongnairat. With the pair of victories, the United States won Group B and advanced to the semifinals.

In the semifinals, the U.S. fell to Mexico, 3-1. Lam won the point for the United States with his victory at #2 singles. Later in the day, the U.S. played Guatemala again in the 3/4 match. The Americans won decisively, 3-0, with wins by Shu, Lam and Chiu in singles.
