TOTAL BWF Para-Badminton World Championships

USA brought home three medals at the Para-Badminton World Championships, which took place in Basel, Switzerland. Here is an overview of the tournament from Allison Valli (Para- Badminton Athlete Parent).

 

Eight Para-Badminton athletes attended the Total BWF Para-Badminton World Championships last week.

Katherine Valli, Colleen Gioffreda, Ryan Gioffreda, Dawson McClure, Richard Alcaraz, Jake Petruzelli, Jayci Simon and Miles Krajewski attended the event representing USA Badminton.

Para-Badminton athletes had to qualify to enter the 2019 World Championships. These athletes put in tremendous time and travel to international events to be allowed to enter this event.

All athletes played great in Basel. Biggest win was Katherine Valli winning silver in Women’s Doubles with Carmen Giuhana Poveda Flores from Peru. Katherine also got a Bronze by winning to the semi’s in Women’s Singles. Jayci Simon lost a tough match in WS quarter finals. Colleen Gioffreda played a great 3 game comeback win in WS group play beating Nina Kozlova from Ukraine.

Miles Krajewski had a fantastic win in Group play over China player Luo Guangliang and got to the Quarterfinals in open draw. Dawson McClure, Richard Alcaraz and Ryan Gioffreda also played good singles games and did not get out of group play.

In Mixed Doubles, Jake Petruzzelli/Jayci Simon, Ryan Gioffreda/Colleen Gioffreda, and Miles Krajewski/Yasmina Eissa from Egypt all competed. They all had good matches but did not get out of group play.

In Men’s Doubles Miles and Victor Goncalves Tavares from Brazil got to the semis and won bronze before losing to the eventual winners. Dawson and Wyatt Lightfoot from Canada played great and got to the quarter finals. Jake Petruzzelli and Ryan Gioffreda played well but did not advance from group play.

In Women’s Doubles Colleen Gioffreda and Jayci Simon played spirited matches and did not get out of group play.

For the first time ever, Team USA medaled at Para World Championships bring home 3 medals!!!!

I want to commend the 2 coaches who attended, Yuko Kawasaki and Apirat Moss Lattison who did an outstanding job coaching, mentoring and encouraging our athletes. Thank you both for your hard work and dedication to build USA Para-Badminton program!
