Oct. 10, 2019, 4:07 p.m. (ET)

Starting April 2019 USA Badminton (USAB) will recognize a Technical Official every month. Technical Officials (TOs) are an important group of experts who play a critical role in the development of the game.

For October 2019, USA Badminton would like to recognize Phillip Ayoung-Chee, who has been umpiring for 30 years and is a huge fan of the British neo-progressive rock group "Marillion".

In college Phillip became involved in organizing tournaments and club activities. Later, he officiated as a line judge in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and was encouraged by Dudley Chen, David Zarco, and Paisan Rangsikitpho to umpire on an international level.  Phillip is proud that he will represent the United States as an umpire in the 2020 Paralympic games in Tokyo.

Phillip recently passed the BWF assessment to move up to a BWF Certificated Level which is the highest umpiring level possible in the world.

“It has been a long and arduous journey achieving BWF Certification,” said Phillip. “Passing that milestone validated the faith placed upon me by my mentors and my family.  Beyond that, it means that I have been evaluated as having the qualities necessary to become part of a very elite group.”

Congratulations Phillip!
