U.S. Athletes conclude play at the BWF World Junior Championship 2019

Oct. 09, 2019, 9:04 p.m. (ET)

The United States juniors competing at the BWF World Junior Championships 2019 in Kazan, Russia, have concluded their play at the tournament.

“Every US player played and fought hard in the individual events,” said U.S. coach Andy Chong. “Skill and strokes, we are on par with many top juniors from various countries.”

Two mixed doubles teams and one girls doubles duo advanced to the round 32. Winston Tsai and Tammy Xie defeated a pair from Chinese Taipei in two games, eventually lost to an Indian tandem. Sri Kolla and Kristen Choi defeated a mixed doubles team from Sri Lanka in three close games, then lost to a doubles pairing from Malaysia. In girls doubles, Katelin Ngo and Natalie Chi defeated an England tandem that was ranked 11th in the championships in 2 games, before finally losing to the Japanese top pair.

“I could see that the juniors were excited to play and they did try their best,” said Chong. “We need to improve on consistency and accuracy, but especially competition experiences. We need to learn how to create opportunities and finally win the rallies.”

Last week, in the Mixed Team portion of the BWF Junior World Championships, the U.S. team finished 18th among the 43 teams. The U.S. qualified for the Final Stage 17-24 group and advanced to the finals of that group before losing to the Czech Republic.

“Thank you USAB for giving me this opportunity to lead the team,” said Chong. “We had a great team and good teamwork among players, parents and coaches.”
