Technical Official's Corner: Hai Huang

Starting April 2019 USA Badminton (USAB) will recognize a Technical Official every month. Technical Officials (TOs) are an important group of experts who play a critical role in the development of the game.

For November 2019, USA Badminton would like to recognize Hai Huang who started as a scorekeeper in 2015 and has been an umpire for more than two years.

This September Hai became a referee and had his first experience as a deputy referee for the local ZBTC tournament. “It is a big step forward to me, as I realize the amount of work of organizing a tournament is eye-opening” said Hai. “These broader responsibilities definitely require much more dedication and devotion. Seeing more and more kids start to play and level of competition increases dramatically, I pledge my best to help to facilitate more enjoyable, high quality tournaments for our athletes to play.”

Hai said that he became an umpire because he wanted to give back to society and contribute more. “Being an umpire is the perfect way to earn the privilege to serve our community. I've learned a lot from experienced officials, and it is such a rewarding experience to have opportunities to closely engage with so many talented players and be part of these amazing matches.”

Something you probably don’t know about Hai is that he is a big soccer fan and has played different positions over the years. “Badminton is something I "accidentally" picked up when I was injured and waiting for my knee surgery and have been in love with this wonderful sport ever since. Now I am trying to strike an elegant balance among work, badminton, and soccer. Of course, umpiring always takes precedence.”

Congratulations Hai!
