Technical Official Of The Month

July 16, 2019, 1:16 p.m. (ET)

Starting April 2019 USA Badminton will recognize a Technical Official every month. Technical Officials (TOs) are an important group of experts who play a critical role in the development of the game.

For July 2019, USA Badminton would like to recognize Ian Counter, who became a technical official 22 years ago. When Ian moved to the US, he wanted to find a way to give back to a sport that had given so much to him as a player.

Ian officiated his most exciting match as a service judge. “Men’s doubles final as service judge at the Korean Open in 2009, a Korean pair vs a Danish Pair. The atmosphere in the venue was incredible, I can't imagine what it would be like to officiate in front of a home crowd in some of the other Asian countries where the fans are really fanatical.”

Ian said that his favorite part about being a technical official is working our junior tournaments and seeing the development of Badminton in the US.

Recently, Ian was the referee for the 2019 Junior Nationals in Frisco, TX and shared about his experience. “I love officiating at Junior Nationals and seeing the future of USA Badminton. That said, it is exhausting experience, so many long days, and you want everything to be perfect for the players, coaches, parents / spectators and technical officials. I do love it and probably average attending 3 out of every 4 years for the last 20 years.”

If Ian could have one superpower, he said he would love to be rich so he could contribute money for the development of our high-performance players and developmental programs.
