U.S. Athletes in Action at 2019 TOTAL BWF World Championships

The 2019 TOTAL BWF World Championships kicked off on Monday, August 19 in Basel, Switzerland. The U.S. has nine athletes competing across four different events at the World Championships:

Women’s Singles
Beiwen Zhang (No. 9)
Crystal Pan (No. 69)

Men’s Doubles
Phillip Chew/Ryan Chew (No. 54)

Women’s Doubles
Ariel Lee/Sydney Lee (No. 52)
Emily Kan/Isabel Zhong (No. 58)

Mixed Doubles
Mathew Fogarty/Isabel Zhong (No. 80)

On Monday, the U.S. had many athletes in action.

The mixed doubles duo of Fogarty/Zhong played in the opening match of the day on Court 4 and lost to the Ukrainian team of Valeriy Atrashchenkov/Yelyzaveta Zharka, 21-9, 21-10.

In women’s singles, Pan dropped her opening match to Nitchaon Jinapol (Thailand), 21-9, 21-14.

In women’s doubles play, the U.S. teams fell to a pair of French team.  Kan/Zhong lost in their opening match to Emilie Lefel/Anne Tran, 21-5, 21-14, while the team of Lee/Lee fell to Delphine Delrue/Lea Palermo, 21-5, 21-6.

On Tuesday, the U.S. captured it’s first victory as the men’s doubles team of Phillip Chew/Ryan Chew defeated Simon Wing Hang Leung/Mitchell Wheller (Australia), 21-16, 21-9. The Chew/Chew tandem will take on the No. 12 seed Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi (Japan) on Wednesday at approximatelt 5:20 pm local time.

After receiving a first round bye, Beiwen Zhang will play her first match in women’s singles on Wednesday. The top-ranked U.S. player will take on Hsuan-Yu Wendy Chen from Australia at around noon, local time.
