Crystal Pan and Jennie Gai advance to Pan Am Championship Semifinals

2019 Pan Am Individual Championships


Action continued at the XXIII Pan Am Individual Championships 2019 on Friday, April 25, in Aguas Calientes, Mexico. 

In women’s singles, Crystal Pan and Jennie Gai won their quarterfinals matches and are advancing to the semifinals on Saturday. Pan defeated a pair of Brazilians on her to the semis, Jaqueline Lima (21-14, 21-17) and Samia Lima (16-21, 21-8, 21-15). Pan will take on Canadian Michelle Li for a chance to head to the finals. Gai beat a couple of the home country favorites, Hamara Gaitan (21-16, 20-22, 21-19) and Mariana Ugalde (21-15, 21-16). Gai will face Canadian Brittney Tam in the semifinals. 

Howard Shu defeated Cesar Adonis Brito Gonzalez (Dominican Republic) 21-14, 21-16, to advance to the quarterfinals in men’s singles, but fell to Kevin Cordon (Guatemala) 21-16, 21-11. 

Brothers Phillip and Ryan Chew picked up the other U.S. win on Friday, defeating Uriel Francisco Canjura Artiga (El Salvador) and Alonso Medel (Chile) 21-12, 21-19, in men’s doubles. 

The semifinals of the Pan Am Individual Championships begin on Saturday at 10 a.m. CT. Jennie Gai’s match is the second of the day, while Crystal Pan’s match is the final match of the morning session.
