To open the Youth Olympic Games 2018 Buenos Aires, US athlete Jennie Gai quickly defeated Fernanda Saponara Rivva, of Peru, 21-10, 21-7, on Sunday.

"Jennie started off with good win, moving her opponent well and forcing her opponent to make mistakes," said coach Andy Chong. "Jennie was in control throughout the whole match and did not make many unforced errors," added Chong.

In her second match, Gai defeated Indian player Jakka Vaishnavi Reddy, who was seeded fourth, in a close match. Gai led for the entire first game with good control and killing smashes. In the second game, the Vaishnavi Reddy began to move Gai around, which led to some errors for the American. Gai trailed, 11-5, early but came back strong and won 23-21.

"During the break [in the second game], I told Jennie to move her opponent more and not just returning," said Chong. "[I told her to] hit her shot high so she has time to get ready to take control again."

Gai closes out group play on Tuesday against Elena Andreu of Spain. Andreu lost her opening match to Vaishnavi Reddy, 21-13, 21-6, but defeated Saponava Rivva, 21-17, 21-13.
