Beiwen Makes Quick Work of Lee

March 07, 2018, 6:47 p.m. (ET)

In the first tournament after her India Open victory, Beiwen Zhang took care of the World No. 26 Chia Hsin Lee from Chinese Taipei in two sets, 21-14, 21-16, at the 2018 German Open. The victory pushes Beiwen to 4-0 all-time against the 20-year old – all two-set victories.

The opening game was tied at six, seven, nine, and 10 before Beiwen scored 11 of the next 15 points in dominating fashion.

Zhang fell behind, losing the first two points in the second game before tying it at three. The match was relatively close at 14-12 until Beiwen made a smash down the right sideline. From there Lee looked defeated and Beiwen finished with six of the final 10 points.

In the second round, Beiwen will face Japan’s Aya Ohori. Ohori defeated Michell Li in straight sets, 21-19, 21-14 in a rematch of last year’s US Open in Anaheim, CA.

Ohori and Zhang have never played each other before. The winner of their 4:35 local time match will face the winner of Akane Yamaguchi vs. Yu Po Pai in the quarterfinals.
