Upsets set the tone at U.S. Open Day 2

CHAOS ON THE MEN’S SIDE

In front of a packed house at the Titan Gym, fans watched as both men’s singles and men’s doubles saw a number of upsets.

The biggest upset of the day came when former world No. 1 Lin Dan dropped the first game to Korean Lee Dong Keun and was trailing in the second game, 19-12, when he was forced to retire due to an upper body injury.




Shortly before the Lin loss, former world No. 2 Jan Jorgensen also lost to No. 3 seed Brice Leverdez of France, 21-16, 21-16.

In men’s doubles action, three of the top four seeds went down. No. 2 seeds Attri Manu and Reddy B. Sumeeth of India lost via walkover and No. 3 seed Tinn Isriyanet and Kittisak Namdash of Thailand fell to the English duo of Ben Lan and Sean Vendy, 23-21, 21-14. Additionally, the No. 4 seeds from Germany, Mark Lamsfuss and Marvin Emil Seidel, lost to the Chinese team of Ou Xuanyi and Xiangyu Ren, 21-17, 21-18. 

AMERICAN PLAYERS UPDATE

Beiwen Zhang leads a strong contingent of U.S. players remaining in the 2018 YONEX U.S. Open after the round of 32.

 

 


Zhang, who is participating in both women’s singles and doubles, won matches in both events on Wednesday as she defeated German Yvonne Li in singles (21-13, 21-14) and with Jing Yu Hong defeated Amanda Hogstrom and Clara Nistad of Sweden, 21-17, 21-17. The duo of Zhang and Hong will now play fellow Americans Eva Lee and Paula Lynn Obanana, who advanced via a walkover, on Thursday at 4:30 pm PT. Also advancing to the round of 32 for the U.S. in women’s doubles was Breanna Chi and Mirabelle Huang, who defeated Italians Silvia Garino and Lisa Iverson 21-11, 21-12.

Two men’s doubles teams are also advancing for America. Abhishek Ahlawat and Ankit Chhikara beat the tandem of American Calvin Lin and Indonesian Ferdinand Sinatra Surbakit in three games, 19-21, 21-15, 21-16, while Vinson Chui and Bo Zhao defeated brothers Phillip and Ryan Chew, 21-19, 21-18.
