USA Badminton is seeking Coaching Director Candidate

Election Process

The mission of USA Badminton (USAB) is to foster the growth of badminton in the United States and competitive excellence by U.S. athletes in international and Olympic competition.

USAB is seeking candidates wishing to be considered for election to the Coaching Director position on the organization’s Board of Directors. Interested candidates must be a citizen of the United States and at least eighteen (18) years of age. This vacancy will be completing the term for Carl Khor who made a difficult decision to step down from the Board to commit more time to other professional activities.  USAB extends its sincere thanks to Mr. Khor for his two years of service.

The term for this position runs through 2020, with the candidate being eligible to stand for election for one additional four-year term. Please note the following relative to service on the Board:

  • In-person Board meetings are held three times annually at various locations around the country. If an additional meeting is necessary, it will be held by conference call.
  • Board members pay their own way (travel, lodging and meals) to attend these meetings.

The Nominating and Governance Committee (“Committee”) is soliciting nominations. Any candidate wishing to be considered for the Coach Director position must be certified at a High Performance 1 level or higher in the USAB’s certification framework.  The following criteria must also be met at the time of submission to be accepted: 1) current USAB member in good standing, 2) a current background check on file, and 3) a current certificate of completion on file of SafeSport training.

Interested and qualified individuals should submit the following materials to the USAB Nominating and Governance Committee, at by 12:00 PM PT on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 to be considered:

  • Nomination statement (not more than 200 words) summarizing qualifications, motivation and willingness to serve
  • Current resume/CV and/or bio with professional and governance qualifications

Nominees will be vetted and approved by both the Committee and the Ethics/Judicial Committee. The Committee shall select at least two (2) candidates, assuming at least two apply who meet the minimum requirements and pass reference and background checks, from those who apply, they will then stand as nominees for election.   Only one candidate will be elected.

Any finalist will be required to submit to multiple levels of background checks, including the verification of academic and/or professional credentials, civil/criminal, credit and social media checks, all of which will be conducted on behalf of USAB by an independent third party. Any finalist will also be required to complete all SafeSport Training requirements as outlined by USAB.

Voting process

The election will take place online from January 24, 2018 to February 13, 2019.  Each USAB coach member shall have one (1) vote. Eligible coach members shall be defined as any USAB coach Sport Performance 1 level or higher.  In order to be eligible, the following criteria must also be met at least seven (7) days prior to the start date of voting for the election: 1) current USAB member in good standing, 2) a current background check on file, and 3) a current certificate of completion on file of SafeSport training.

The individual with the highest vote total is elected, subject to vetting as outlined above.

Votes cast will be tabulated by Election Runner, with results scheduled to be announced on February 14, 2019.

Functions of the Board of Directors

As a member of the USAB Board of Directors, the Coaching Director will provide guidance toward achieving USAB’s strategic plan and long-term coaching objectives, provide input and advice on coaching related procedures and issues, and represent the interest of USAB coaches.


The Board of Directors as a whole represents the interests of USAB’s membership, the United States Badminton community and Badminton athletes by providing USAB with policy guidance and strategic direction. The Board oversees the management of USAB and its affairs, but it does not manage USAB. The Board shall select a well-qualified and ethical Chief Executive Officer and diligently oversee the Chief Executive Officer in the operation of USAB. The Board shall focus on long-term objectives and impacts rather than on day-to-day management, empowering the Chief Executive Officer to manage a staff-driven organization with effective Board oversight. In addition, the Board performs the following specific functions, among others:

  • selects, compensates, supports, and evaluates the Chief Executive Officer and plans for management succession;
  • reviews and approves USAB's strategic plan and the annual operating plans, budget, business plans, and corporate performance;
  • sets policy and provides guidance and strategic direction to management on significant issues facing USAB;
  • reviews and approves significant corporate actions;
  • ·oversees the financial reporting process, communications with stakeholders, and USAB's legal and regulatory compliance program;
  • ·oversees effective corporate governance;
  • approves capital structure, financial strategies, borrowing commitments, and long-range financial planning;
  • reviews and approves financial statements, annual reports, audit and control policies, and, upon the recommendation of the Audit Committee, selects independent auditors;
  • monitors to determine whether USAB’s assets are being properly protected;
  • monitors USAB’s compliance with laws and regulations and the performance of its broader responsibilities; and
  • ensures that the Board and management are properly structured and prepared to act in case of an unforeseen corporate crisis.
