Beiwen Zhang at World Championships

American Beiwen Zhang rallied from an opening game loss to defeat Chloe Birch, of England, 13-21, 21-15, 21-18, at the TOTAL BWF World Championships 2018 in Nanjing, China. Zhang was admittedly nervous to start the match, her first ever match at the World Championships, but found her stroke in the middle of the second game.

“I could not accept coming to the World Championships in China and losing my first match,” Zhang, who was born in China, told reporters. "She had so much power and was so fast. I was surprised. I was trying to speed up but I could not get control so I had to change my strategy and attack more."

Zhang, the No. 12 seed in the World Championships, will now face the current world No. 1 in women's singles, Tai Tzu Ying in the round of 16.

Other American players at the World Championships include Phillip and Ryan Chew, Ariel and Sydney Lee, and Mathew Fogarty and Isabel Zhong.

The Chew brothers took on Jelle Maas and Robin Tabeling of the Netherlands in men's doubles. Phillip and Ryan dropped the opening game, but took game two to force a third. In the third, the Dutch duo won 21-15 to win the match, 13-21, 21-19, 15-21.

Ariel and Syndey Lee fell in their opening round match to the Russian tandem of Ekaterina Bolotova and Alina Davletova, 7-21, 9-21.

Mathew Fogarty and Isabel Zhong also dropped their first round match to Jacco Arends and Selena Piek, of the Netherlands, 6-21, 4-21.
