USA Athletes Take Silver in XD and WS

April 09, 2018, 1 p.m. (ET)

Over the weekend, three Americans played in the VI Argentina International 2018, with all three placing in the top four. The event is part of the Badminton World Federation Future Series, a series of grade-three events that are played on a continental level.

Ricky Liuzhou, who played for the United States Thomas Cup team in Trinidad and Tobago in February, competed in both men’s singles and mixed doubles. After advancing to the semifinals in both events, Liuzhou placed second in mixed doubles with Angela Zhang and finished 3/4 in men’s singles.

Zhang, who was a part of the youthful Uber Cup team at the Male and Female Pan Am Team Continental Championships, fell in the second round of the women’s singles, but was able to combine with Liuzhou for a second-place finish in mixed doubles.

The final American playing was also the youngest, 14-year old Ruhi Raju. The teenager took second in women’s singles, cruising to the championship without allowing an opponent to score more than 11 points in a game. In the title match, Raju battled against the No. 1 seeded Jaqueline Lima from Brazil, but fell 21-15, 21-18.
