Iris Wang celebrating after a win.

This week, USA athletes are back in action in Bangkok, Thailand, at the Yonex Thailand Open Super 1000, after a months-long break from tournaments. A total of three athletes will be representing the U.S., Iris Wang in women’s singles and Phillip and Ryan Chew in men’s doubles, Wang and Phillip Chew both 2016 Olympians for Team USA.

Today, in the first round, Iris Wang faced World No. 34, Line Højmark KjaerSfeldt of Denmark. Wang won the opening game, 21-17, losing a tight second game 19-21 but securing the third game 21-16 in a hard-fought 62-minute battle. With that win, Wang advances to the next round to meet World No.18 Danish Mia Blichfeldt, who earlier defeated the No. 6 seed and reigning World Champion P.V. Sindhu (India).

Other Americans in action, the Chews, are scheduled to play their first-round on Jan. 13. They will be facing the Thai pair of Apiluk Gaterahong and Natchanon Tulamok, who have been promoted from the reserve list.
