What is Continuing Education in relation to USA Badminton Coaching Development?

Coaching development is a “journey” of self-discovery of how a coach acquires one’s coaching experiences and skills. A course is therefore not a one stop improvement point to grade a coach. A course provides the opportunity for a coach to be assessed, grow his/her coaching network, moderate his/her perceptions on coaching, and attain  basic foundation in coaching relevant to his/her students or community.

Badminton coaches in the United States are expected to know more than badminton. They must be excellent teachers, motivators, organizers, including being able to apply and abide by the complex United States laws and regulations governing sports and athlete safety. Coaching like any career requires the practicing coaches to continuously develop and keep abreast with progress and change. This process of development requires a continuous formal and informal training.

In general, any time when a coach returns to studies of any kind to learn something new, he/she is  continuing his/her education. In USA Badminton’s context, “Continuing Education” is a term describing additional formal learning activities that are generally ‘add on’ to the coach’s repertoire of skills or ‘refreshes’ the coach’s knowledge, skills and current best practices so that the coach will maintain his/her competency. Continuing Education recommended by USA Badminton can be in the form of self-directed courses, group-based in person courses, or online hybrid mediums managed by USA Badminton or third party providers.

Why Continuing Education?

Badminton like any sports in the United States has grown rapidly over the past three decades. The badminton clientele of today are more knowledgeable regarding badminton and their expectations have also increased. In the future the badminton community in the United States will demand coaches to have the leadership of highly skilled professionals. Hence, obtaining Continuing Education in the various areas connected to their clientele and the specific badminton community provides excellent preparation to meet the complex needs of this rapidly growing sport.
