Level 1 High Performance

The Level 1 High Performance course is designed as a face to face (and some on-line assessment in future) based course. This course intends to build on the training and current competency of the coach.

The Level 1 High Performance Course is designed based on the following guiding pillars - Coach Centered, Competency, U.S. Athlete Centered, Participant Centered & Continuous Learning. It aims to ensure that the participating coach is well equipped with the relevant skills to continuously enhance the performance of his/her athletes.

Primary Audience: 
This course is open to the individuals who must:
Be 18 years and older
A current USAB member in good standing
Have a USAB approved background check on file (applied on their USAB Coach Dashboard)
Have completed Safe Sports Training
Legally working and residing in the U.S. if he/she is a foreign coach and/or foreign international player(s)**
Meet 2 out of 4 of the application criteria

Application Criteria:
The applicant must meet 2 out of 4 criteria below:
1. Must be training high performance players* (one player or a group of players),
2. Assists and/or leads a dedicated high performance program*** that caters for a single player or a group of players,
3. Has been a USAB Level 3 Sport Performance for a minimum of 12 months,
4. Former and current international players**

High performance players*
High performance athletes are those athletes who train:
1. and compete in the USAB Junior Ranking Tournaments to qualify for the USAB Junior Nationals and USAB Junior International Trials (JIT) to represent the U.S. in the BWF World Junior Championships and the Pan Am Junior Championships,
2. regularly in order to compete in Badminton World Federation (BWF) sanctioned junior and adult international Competitions as well as the Pan Am Individual Championships
3. and compete in the USAB Team Trials for the premier BWF sanctioned team events (such as the Sudirman Cup - World Mixed Team Championships, Thomas & Uber Cup - World Men & Women Team Championships, BWF sanctioned individual tournaments, Badminton Pan Am Confederation (BPAC) Continental Team Event, Youth Olympic Games, Pan Am Games, and the Olympic Games.

International Players**
1. Current international players who are competing regularly (a minimum of 4 times per year) in BWF sanctioned team events and/or BWF sanctioned individual tournaments.
2. Former international players who competed regularly (a minimum of 4 times per year) in BWF sanctioned team events and/and BWF sanctioned individual tournaments.

High Performance Program***
1. A high performance coaching program is not merely for the "star talent." It is about helping athletes reach their full potential. It may also involve collaborating with other individuals who may be experts in certain performance enhancement fields or those involved with the athlete which eventually aims ensuring that the athletes perform at their best level. Such a high performance program involves sport specific, mental training, conditioning training, and fitness training which simply aim to improve performance.
2. The high performance program includes organized and systematic plans that involve structured activities on strength training, conditioning and cardiovascular training, sport specific techniques and drills, periodization (devoting specific blocks of time during a given year to different types and intensities of exercise depending on when optimal performance is needed), nutritional advice, mental and psychological training, and constant and consistent accountability and monitoring by a qualified trainer.

Course Fees: 
The USAB Level 1 HP course fee is $400. The cost covers the facilitation of the course. This fee must be paid to USA Badminton by the candidate at the time of application. All other expenses incurred by the applicant including travel, accommodation and meals must be borne by the applicant.

Payment must be made by credit card. Use the USAB credit card authorization form. The completed credit card form must accompany the application form by the deadline specified for each course to Ryan Berry at ryan.berry@usabadminton.org

Cancellation Policy
If you withdraw from the course, the fee will not be refunded. The fees will be used in the next course that you sign up to attend. However, there will be a $50 cancellation penalty fee. Cancelation because of medical reasons will not incur the cancellation penalty fee. However, a doctor’s letter showing proof that you are not medically fit to attend will be required.

Core Modules:The USAB Level 1 High Performance Coach (HPC) Certification Program will consist of the following core modules: Coaching Process, Coaching Principles, Performance Factors, On Court Best Practices, Competition Analysis, Event Analysis, Coaches' Code of Conduct and Ethics and other areas that are related to high performance including USOC, BWF and other external Coach Education Resources

Course Delivery: The current course format is face to face course with assessment. It empowers the coach to have an active role in learning, self-reflection and sharing their work in the form of report writing, interaction in group work and also presentation.

Safety: USA Badminton places great importance on the safety of its members especially the athletes. Safe Sports: USA Badminton’s Safe Sport is related to off-court safety. USA Badminton’s  Safe Sport Program aims to protect its participants from physical abuse, sexual abuse and other types of abuse and misconduct that can be harmful to its junior players and other participants.  These include without limitation Physical Abuse, Sexual Abuse, Screening, Locker Room Supervision and Hazing Policies, in addition to the Codes of Conduct applicable to coaches, team officials, and players.
