Before the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 were postponed to 2021, the coaches from NBCs The Voice decided to get into the Olympic spirit by trying different Olympic Sports. On the Season 18 finale of The Voice, coach John Legend tried his hand at artistic swimming.

The Voice coach teamed up with USA Artistic Swimming’s Olympic hopeful duet pair of Anita Alvarez and Lindi Schroeder to see if he had the skills to join the team.

2016 Olympian, Anita Alvarez said the fact that such a well-known artist like Legend wanted to try artistic swimming in first place was so awesome, but being the one to teach him about the sport alongside Schroeder was unforgettable.

“We were really impressed because he told us he just learned how to swim this year, and we thought it was so cool that after only a year in the water he wanted to give our sport a try,” Alvarez said.

Legend dove right into learning Alvarez and Schroeder’s Freestyle Duet routine. Schroeder said meeting Legend and seeing how enthusiastic he was to learn about the sport was such a memorable experience.

“I am always excited when I can introduce someone new to the sport, and John and the entire crew were so welcoming and appreciative of the sport that it only made our experience even better,” Schroeder said.

As the pair taught Legend a few eight-counts of their Billie Eilish themed routine they were even more impressed with Legend’s ability to hold his breath as long as they could.

“Those singer lungs came in handy when we were trying to put him in a handstand because he stayed underwater for a long time without panicking,” Alvarez noted.
