USA Artistic Swimming New Board of Directors Structure Finalized

July 24, 2020, 12:48 p.m. (ET)

(COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.) - During the June USA Artistic Swimming (USAAS) Board of Directors (BOD) meeting, a new board structure was agreed upon. The BOD made bold steps in Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts and ensured that athletes would have a greater voice in the way the organization operates. The decision expands the BOD from 14 to 15 members. This will include a Vice President (VP) of DEI and two additional Athlete At Large representatives to meet the eventual requirements of 33.3% athlete representation on the BOD.

Wednesday evening, the BOD voted to approve the board structure outlined below. You will see that there is no longer a VP of Education and Certification. The responsibilities of that position will be moved to the newly titled VP of Member Development (Formerly VP of Marketing and Membership) and the Vice President of Competitive Operations. Committee and responsibility restructure details will be voted on at the August BOD meeting. What is important for the USAAS Board of Governors (BOG) and the entire membership to know is that we place no lesser value on education and certification than we previously did. With the staff in place and the current realignment we believe that this structure will better serve the membership.

These changes come just ahead of USAAS Virtual Convention 2020. At Convention, the BOG will now vote in a new President, VP of Olympic International and VP of DEI. The Athlete Executive Council (AEC) will vote in two new athletes. Unlike current athlete rules, athletes eligible for these positions are any athlete who has competed in an Olympic Games, Pan American Games and/or World Championship event anytime in their career. This opens the candidate pool tremendously and allows for a broader athlete perspective. Finally, the newly appointed BOD will vote to approve two new Independent Directors shortly after the conclusion of Convention. Every change made in the restructure was thoroughly discussed and we believe that it will improve the leadership structure as we continue to strive to become the best in the world.

A call for nominations for BOD, BOG and voted Committee members will be sent to all members later today. We hope that you will consider being nominated or nominating someone that you know will help us grow.
