US Duet in Third Place at German Open

BONN, Germany - The U.S. duet of Anita Alvarez (Kenmore, N.Y.) and Mariya Koroleva (Concord, Calif.) got off to a strong start at the German Synchronized Swimming Open on Friday, taking third place after the duet technical routine.

Alvarez and Koroleva scored 80.5913 points, just behind first-place France (83.4469) and Mexico (81.8737).

The duo will compete in the duet free on Saturday, with the final set for Sunday.

Swimmers from 22 countries are competing at the German Open, including 27 duets, in a preview of the Olympic Games Qualification Tournament. Alvarez and Koroleva will attempt to qualify for the Games at that event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, March 2-6.
