Duet Starts 2016 Season At German Open

Jan. 25, 2016, 11:55 a.m. (ET)

BONN, Germany - U.S. Olympic hopefuls Anita Alvarez and Mariya Koroleva begin their 2016 season Friday at the German Synchronized Swimming Open.

The U.S. national team members will compete in the duet technical Jan. 29 and the duet free on Jan. 30, with the final set for Jan. 31.

Alvarez and Koroleva will be presenting new routines at the German Open and next week’s French Open in Paris (Feb. 5-7).

According to USA Synchro Executive Director Myriam Glez, the duet’s technical routine and music – modern violins – are very fast, while the free duet choreography is “intricate, interesting and challenging with a lot more technical content than last year.

“Anita and Mariya have worked very hard physically to swim these two routines. They are showing different skills, speed, power, mature choreography and technical difficulty.”

Swimmers from 22 countries will compete at the German Open, including 27 duets, in a preview of the Olympic Games Qualification Tournament. Alvarez and Koroleva will attempt to qualify for the Games at that event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, March 2-6.

Alvarez and Koroleva, who were named the U.S. Olympic qualification duet in September 2015, began their Olympic quest two weeks ago by traveling to Rome for a training camp with the Italian national team, at the invitation of the Italian Federation.

After the camp, the duo traveled to Genoa, Italy, to train with the club of Linda Cerruti, Italy’s soloist. The U.S. duet has been under the direction of U.S. Senior National Team coach Lolli Montico.
