Summer training camp for women yields great results

The first Women of Speed summer camp, held at the John Rose Oval in Roseville, Minnesota, brought together a fabulous group of young women, dedicated to the sport of speedskating.

Olympic bronze medalist and 2019 World Champion Brittany Bowe led the team in several activities, both on and off the ice, with the help of several of the best USS female coaches: Marion Wohlrab, Sara Bowles, Betsy Richards and Susan Sandvig-Shobe. Bowe also addressed parents and skaters of the Midway Speed Skating Club, during a club dinner.

“It was an honor to work with the young ladies of our sport,” Bowe said. “Seeing them gain skills, strength and confidence throughout the weekend was exactly what I had hoped for.”

The camp included short track sessions, inline workouts, weight training, technique, team-building and even a soccer game. Mental preparation was a big focus, as well as nutrition and life balance. Kathy Herman from the Midway Club was an incredible support, organizing meals, equipment and set-up.

Bowles organized fun team-building exercises for the group where they needed to support each other to reach the finish line.

“We had some good conversations around competition routines, nutrition for different kinds of training days and regulating our emotions,” Wohlrab said. “The focus of the camp was on empowerment, support, education, friendship, confidence, self-improvement and skill development. There was great energy, focused work and great improvements to notice in confidence.”

“It was an honor to work with this fine group of young USS women and see each of them grow over the course of three days to be more confident in their abilities and who they want to be as a women and as a team,” Wohlrab said. “I compliment their work ethic and appreciate their openness and trust in our conversations. Women of Speed - you are rockstars and let no one tell you differently! Thank you Brittany for taking time to be part of this camp and being such a great and inspiring role model for these young women.”

"It was cool to get to work with Brittany Bowe," said camp participant Emily Bos. "I enjoyed meeting US Speedskating representatives that I would not have had the chance to work with outside of this camp. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to get advice from some of the best in the country.”
