Olympic teammates reunite on the ball field

Olympic short track speedskater and silver medalist Eddy Alvarez came into town last weekend as his Triple-A baseball team, the New Orleans Baby Cakes, took on the Salt Lake Bees. Alvarez, an infielder for the Baby Cakes, skated in the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, winning a silver medal in the 5000m relay.

Alvarez’s Olympic team member, three-time Olympic medalist J.R. Celski, threw out the first pitch at Smith’s Ballpark to Alvarez while members of the US Speedskating National Short Track and Long Track Teams cheered them on.

“Anytime I get a chance to see Eddy is a good time because of his current schedule with baseball,” Celski said. “It just works out that his team is in the same division as the Salt Lake Bees, so when he called me up and let me know he was coming here to play, I was pumped. I’m honored to throw the first pitch. Even cooler that I’ll be able to throw the pitch out to Eddy.”

Over the weekend, Alvarez and several of his Baby Cakes teammates stopped the The Speed Factory at the Utah Olympic Oval to use the training facility.

"It's so different from speedskating," Alvarez said about his baseball career. "With speedskating you train all the time but only race twice a month. With baseball, we play 140 games. But I'm having so much fun!"
