Brittany Bowe brings home the gold in Obihiro

U.S. Olympian Brittany Bowe (Ocala, Fla.) took home the gold medal and set a new track record in the Ladies 1500m race during Saturday’s action at the ISU Speedskating World Cup event in the Meiji Hokkaido-Tokachi Oval in Obihiro, Japan. The two-time Olympian and defending World Sprint Championships silver medalist blazed around the oval in a time of 1:55.034, besting the previous track record by more than three-quarters of a second, and setting a new season best time. She also earned the U.S. team’s first medal of the season.

Bowe also had the next best performance by Team USA on Saturday with a 6th place finish in the Ladies 500m .(38.070). American Erin Jackson (Ocala, Fla.) finished 18th (38.864) in the event with Japan’s Nao Kodaira winning the race with 37.298. In the Ladies 1500m B division race Kimi Goetz was 18th (2:02.51) and Carlijn Schoutens (Heemstead, Netherlands) finished 21st (2:04.503)

In the Ladies mass start, Kimi Goetz (Flemington, N.J.) finished in 10th place. 

Among the US men, Joey Mantia (Ocala, Fla.) finished 13th in the Mens mass start, a race won by Italy’s Andrea Giovannini (7:40.89). Mantia also placed 19th in the Mens 1500m and Kimani Griffin (Winston-Salem, NC) landed in the 20th spot in the Mens 500m.

This first long track World Cup event of the season finishes on Sunday with Team USA competing in the Ladies and Mens 1000m, and the Ladies 3000m.

"It feels great to finish at the top and set a new track record today in the 1500m," said Brittany Bowe. "With such a talented field of skaters racing, I'm honored to walk away with that one for sure."

"Overall, it was a solid start to the weekend and international season," said USS National Long Track Coach Ryan Shimabukuro. "It's just the beginning though and we're going to remain focused on building off each day."
