World Cup Calgary Begins With Distance Events

Dec. 01, 2017, 8:14 p.m. (ET)

The third stop on the ISU Long Track World Cup circuit began today at the Olympic Oval in Calgary, Canada. Medals were awarded in the men’s and women’s Team Sprint, the women’s 3000m, and the men’s 5000m.

Team USA had three skaters compete on the first day of competition with Carlijn Schoutens (Heemstede, Netherlands) and Mia Manganello (Crestview, Fla.) skating in the women’s 3000m, and Emery Lehman (Oak Park, Ill.) skating in the men’s 5000m.

Lehman shattered his personal best in the men’s 5000m, skating a 6:18.03 to finish 13th in the B Division. The 2014 Olympian took 1.83 seconds off his old personal best time of 6:19.86 which he skated on November 17, 2013 at the Utah Olympic Oval in Salt Lake City, Utah. Lehman’s time would have been the 15th-fastest time in the men’s 5000m A Division.

“I got sick before my race and the last time I did that was when I set my old 5000m PB,” said Lehman. “I knew it was going to be a good one.”

Schoutens skated in the A division, finishing 15th in a time of 4:09.01, while Manganello placed 19th in the B Division with a season-best time of 4:06.98 (4:07.27 - skated Oct. 13 in Salt Lake City). Manganello’s time was nearly three seconds faster than her time of 4:09.29 that she skated in the 3000m at World Cup Heerenveen – the only other 3000m skated on the World Cup circuit this season.
