KT Tape Evolves With Olympic Sports

Skating has come a long way since the days of adding bones to shoes to travel frozen rivers and lakes. Today, speed skating involves specialized skates, a spandex skin suit, and cut-proof skating gloves. When you are speeding around an oval rink at upwards of 30 miles/hour, you are bound to experience some injuries. Common speed skating injuries include shoulder separations, muscle tightness, lower back pain, ankle sprains, knee inflammation, and groin strains—just to name a few.  While an accurate medical diagnosis is always the first step in treatment, speed skaters can find pain relief and support using kinesiology tape.

When an area of the body experiences an injury through impact or over-use, the resulting accumulation of lymphatic fluids (fluid that bathes tissues), may cause increased pressure which can cause significant discomfort or pain. When kinesiology tape is applied over an injured area of the body, it causes an upward lifting of the skin which may assist with the dispersion of lymphatic fluids, reducing pressure to tissue under the tape and skin which may reduce the discomfort or pain. Correct taping also provides support to muscles by improving the muscle’s ability to contract, even when it is weak, and helps the muscle to not over-extend or over-contract.
