No one who follows long-track speedskating is surprised when Heather Richardson skates fast. The two-time U.S. Olympian is one of the top sprinters in the world.

What Richardson did on the first day of the U.S. Long Track Championships, however, was nothing short of amazing.

In the first of two women's 500-meter races Friday, she shattered a Pettit National Ice Center record that had stood for more than nine years.

Richardson's time of 37.53 seconds not only broke the record of 37.83 set by China's Manli Wang on Nov. 27, 2005, but it was the fastest 500 skated anywhere in the world this season.
