The two main types of paracanoe boats are Kayaks (K), propelled by a double-blade paddle, and outrigger canoes called Va'as (V) where the boat has a second ‘pontoon’ called an ama as a support float. The boat is propelled by a single blade paddle. Paracanoe events debuted at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

The U.S. Paracanoe Team and the day-to-day operations of the high performance program are overseen by the American Canoe Association, the National Governing Body for Paracanoe in the United States.
