Letter from U.S. Paralympics Cycling in Regards to Tokyo Postponement

By U.S. Paralympics Cycling | March 24, 2020, 5:32 p.m. (ET)

Para-cycling athletes,

We wanted to provide you all with an update regarding the postponement of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, as announced earlier this morning.

USOPC CEO, Sarah Hirshland, sent a letter to athletes this morning about the postponement. You can find the letter here on the Team USA.

We realize the last ten days have been hectic, and that you all may have some questions about how this impacts you moving forward. There will be a lot of new information over the coming days and weeks, but we’ve compiled some preliminary information below to help answer some, but certainly not all, of your questions.

2020 Road Season
We’ve received a lot of questions about the road season, and if there will be any events at all on the calendar. Here’s a quick list of key events with notes about what we know today:

  • 2020 Redlands Bicycle Classic – canceled (we expect the event to return for 2021)
  • 2020 Fort Wayne Para-cycling Open – postponed (we aim to run the event in 2021)
  • 2020 USA Cycling Para-cycling Road Nationals – canceled (will be announced this week by USA Cycling)
  • 2020 USA Cycling Para-cycling Track Nationals – to be determined
  • 2020 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships – to be determined (awaiting details from the UCI)
  • 2020 U.S. Paralympic Team Trials – postponed (announcement posted today here)
  • 2020 UCI Para-cycling Road World Cups – to be determined (as of today, the only possibility for Team USA participation at a World Cup is the final event in Baie Comeau, Quebec in early August, and details about the event are not yet clear).

Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games Qualification System
The UCI will revise the qualification and nation’s ranking system for the Tokyo 2020 Games (even when held in 2021, the Games will still be referred to as the “Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games”). We are in contact with the UCI and hope to receive more information about how the qualification system will change, in the coming weeks.

Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games Team USA Selection Process
The selection process for the Team USA Paralympic Cycling roster at the Games will be updated. However, U.S. Paralympics Cycling will not update selection procedures until after the qualification guide for the Games has been amended by the UCI/IPC. We will provide updates to everyone as more information becomes available.

2020 and 2021 National Team Benefits and Athlete Criteria
Due to the Games postponement, as well as the postponement and cancellation of many events in 2020, the 2020 U.S. Paralympics Cycling Athlete & Sport Program Plan will be updated. This includes criteria for National Team status for Term 2 of 2020, as well as Term 1 of 2021. U.S. Paralympics Cycling will be evaluating the plan and will provide more information as things are updated.

Athlete Input
As we navigate all of these changes, U.S. Paralympics Cycling is asking for input from our athletes. We will be relying on our Para-cycling Athlete Advisors to bring forward valuable input from our athlete community, so that we can make informed decisions. You will be hearing from our advisors in the days and weeks, with a request for feedback. You can also reach out to them, here:

You may also reach out directly to our staff as well if you have questions or feedback.

Coronavirus Resources
The USOPC continues to offer more resources for athletes about Coronavirus, and those resources have been compiled on the Team USA Coronavirus update page, here:

Thanks again for your patience as we navigate all of this together!
