Para-cycling athletes,

We are pleased to provide you with another weekly update about Para-cycling and the Paralympic Movement.

Monday, the International Paralympic Committee announced new dates for the 2020 Paralympic Games, which have now been rescheduled to take place between Aug. 24 and Sept. 5, 2021. You can read the full press release via the following link:

You can also view a message about this announcement, from IPC President, Andrew Parsons, via this link:

U.S. Paralympics Cycling is excited about this announcement, as it provides us with a new target to aim for after a lot of uncertainty during the last few weeks. Following the announcement of new dates for the Games, it is now the responsibility of each international federation to evaluate their qualification system for the Games and publish any changes to the process. In the case of Paralympic Cycling, this is the responsibility of the UCI, who we hope will publish an updated Games qualification guide within the next few weeks. This is important because the qualification process drives the domestic and the international calendars for U.S. Paralympics Cycling.

Although key events on the U.S. Paralympics Cycling schedule have already been canceled or postponed, we are not yet able to propose dates or locations for new or replacement events (including the Paralympic Trials), pending any potential updates to the qualification process. As soon as more information on the qualification process is made available by the UCI, U.S. Paralympics Cycling will begin the process of updating our events calendar for 2021, as well as our athlete selection process for the Games. We continue to  update our athlete community every step of the way.

2020 Road Season
Below is another update about key events scheduled for 2020, and their current status:

  • 2020 Redlands Bicycle Classic – canceled (we expect the event to return for 2021)
  • 2020 Fort Wayne Para-cycling Open – postponed (we aim to run the event in 2021)
  • 2020 USA Cycling Para-cycling Road Nationals – canceled
  • 2020 USA Cycling Para-cycling Track Nationals – to be determined
  • 2020 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships – to be determined (you can view a live update about the status of major UCI para-cycling events via this link:
    https://www.uci.org/news/2020/covid-19-pandemic-publication-of-lists-of-postponed-or-cancelled-uci-events
  • 2020 U.S. Paralympic Team Trials – postponed until 2021
  • 2020 UCI Para-cycling Road World Cups – to be determined (as of today, the only possibility for Team USA participation at a World Cup is the final event in Baie Comeau, Quebec in early August, and details about the event are not yet clear).

Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games Team USA Selection Process
As indicated above, the selection process for the Team USA Paralympic Cycling roster at the Games will be updated after the qualification guide for the Games has been amended by the UCI/IPC. We will provide updates to everyone as more information becomes available.

2020 and 2021 National Team Benefits and Athlete Criteria
Due to the Games postponement, as well as the postponement and cancellation of many events in 2020, the 2020 U.S. Paralympics Cycling Athlete & Sport Program Plan will be updated. This includes criteria for National Team status for Term 2 of 2020, as well as Term 1 of 2021. U.S. Paralympics Cycling will be evaluating the plan and will provide more information as things are updated.

Athlete Input
We continue to seek input from our athletes so that we can make informed decisions. We value your direct feedback. However, you can also provide feedback through our athlete advisors, and can contact them directly via this link:
