Sam Grewe broke a world record in the men's high jump T42-47/63-64 on the second night of track and field competition at the 2019 Parapan American Games in Lima, Peru.

Josh Cinnamo (San Diego, California) and Sam Grewe (Middlebury, Indiana) highlighted a 14-medal night for Team USA athletes, breaking world records in the men’s shot put F46 and men’s high jump T42-47/63-64, respectively, at the Villa Deportiva Nacional Videna Athletics Stadium on Sunday.


Top Highlights From Track And Field
Breaking records – Cinnamo and Grewe broke world records on the second day of track and field competition at the 2019 Parapan American Games. Cinnamo smashed his own world mark in the men’s shot put F46 by over half a meter, throwing 16.49-meters for his first major international medal. Grewe edged the previous high jump T63 world record by four centimeters, jumping 1.90-meters for his first Parapan American title.

U.S. podium sweep – David Prince (Marietta, Georgia), Kevan Hueftle (Eustis, Nebraska) and Jerome Singleton (Irmo, South Carolina) swept all three places on the podium in the men’s 200-meter T64. Prince lead the charge with his first medal at a major international competition since 2015. Hueftle earned a silver medal in his international debut with Team USA with Singleton rounding out the podium with bronze.

Golden debuts – Sydney Barta (Arlington, Virginia), Cinnamo, Kym Crosby (Yuba City, California), Justin Phongsavanh (Des Moines, Iowa) and Deja Young (Mesquite, Texas) all impressed at their first Parapan American Games, winning gold in their respective events. For Phongsavanh, this was his first-ever international medal at a competition with Team USA.

What To Watch
After heating up the high jump with a silver medal, Ezra Frech (Los Angeles, California) returns to competition aiming to make the podium again the men’s long jump T63/64 final as events continue Monday. Fellow Los Angeles native Breanna Clark will begin her Parapan American campaign with the event she won her Paralympic gold in, the women’s 400m T20 final. Gianfranco Iannotta (Garfield, N.J.) and Isaiah Rigo (Cheney, Wash.) will face off again in the men’s 100m T52 final, Iannotta’s strongest event where he earned his Paralympic and world championship titles. Rigo edged Iannotta on Sunday in the men’s 400m T52. In the men’s long jump T47, Tobi Fawehinmi (Arlington, Texas) will make his Parapan Am debut alongside U.S. teammate Tanner Wright (Fort Worth, Texas).
